2009 edition of “Carthage Theatre Days” to feature a number of plays by women directors

During a press conference held in Tunis on Wednesday, Mr. Mohamed Driss, the director of Tunisia’s national theatre, presented the rich and eclectic program concocted for the 14th edition of the “Carthage Theatre Days” which will run from November 11 to 22, 2009 in several theatres around the capital.

With some 78 plays from 30 countries representing 3 continents and  including 27 Tunisian plays, the festival will cater for all tastes. Tunisian plays will represent some 50% of the total number of plays. Some 400 international geusts are expected to attend the event.

Held under the theme “Theatre without Borders”, this session promises to be exceptional in terms of the participation of women directors. Some 16 women directors and playwrights will take part in the event.

The Tunisian play “Brouva” by Ridha Grira will open the festival. The play which deals with the theatre scene behind the curtains, will involve some 160 protagonists.

The “Carthage Theatre Days” Festival whose chief vocation is to be an Arab African theatre festival, is organized in Tunis every two years.

It features theatre performances, and includes a competition, seminars and exhibitions. This year’s festival will also feature plays by French, Iranian, German and Belgian directors.
